![]() ![]() If you use lenses (+/- multiplier) with resulting aperture above F:5.6 then the Z7ii starts actually being more reliable than the D850. They are challenging even for the D850 but more manageable. Trying to shoot sand-pipers on the beach with the Z7ii was murder though, they are too fast for a z7ii + 500pf. But even just for stills, if your subjects are slow moving (swimming ducks) or static and if they are not hidden amongst vegetation then the Z7ii is a winner. If this matters to you, the Z7ii will likely be frustrating to use (it was for me for a day of trial).įor everything else, the Z7ii is outstanding - especially if you plan on integrating video and photo, then there is no contest. It's also better on battery life (especially with grip + EL18). The D850 still has much better AF for either moving or challenging subjects (behind branches for example) - at least for as long as we need to rely on adapted F lenses. In the end, the Z7ii is superior in about every way but one, but it's a BIG one if you need it. If you are still on the fence, definitely rent both of them to see what you prefer. I found Steve's ebook and youtube videos help so much with getting familiar with the system. ![]() I will say if you got the mirrorless route, be prepared to practice with it as it's different. Main factors were price (Z7ii was $100 more than D850), weight, IBIS, and video. On my D500 I mainly used single point and group AF however, with the Z7ii I'm using more.Īfter going down the rabbit hole and reading a lot of feedback on this forum, I decided to go the mirrorless route in the end. The one thing I will say is that I have to get used to changing the auto focus modes often to take advantage of this camera. So far I love the weight savings, EVF, and the IBIS the most. Combining it with the 500PF, it is a weight dream compared to my D500/200-500 set up. A few weeks ago I decided on the Z7ii and have no regrets. I struggled with the same decision on whether to get the D850 or Z7II. ![]()
